Mutual Aid Equipment:
On Tuesday June 1st at 1:34 am the Hellam Fire Department as well as many other mutual aid departments were dispatched to a residential structure fire, fire reported in the garage, at 36 N. Wilson Lane in Hellam Township. Members responding realized that the address dispatched belonged to two of our own members, Charles and Linda Stillinger.  Assistant Chief Rudisill was the first to arrive on scene, as he lives just a few houses away.  It was apparent that Charles was very upset due to what was happening at that moment.  We arrived and Charles did what he would do for any fire, he helped us hook the hoses to the trucks and get all the hoses off as fast as possible.  We protected his rental property, which was very close to the fire building and then concentrated our efforts on putting the fire out. They were very lucky to have gotten out when they did. They left all their things behind and were left with what they wore out the door that morning. Charles has been a member here at our department for over 50 years. He and his wife Linda have helped the department greatly throughout the years. During the fire, many of the members were already thinking that we will pull together and help one of our own come back from this terrible experience. The department came up with an idea:  The Stillinger Relief Fund. This fund will help them purchase items that they may not have been able to as soon as they wished. The Hellam Fire Department would like to thank all the people that helped on that morning and in the weeks to follow.
